New for 2009...


No one can argue that smaller companies are the first to rebound at the beginning of an economic expansion cycle. History provides plenty of evidence. Small Cap Growth was the third worst performer in 1990, down 17.41%, and moved to the top position in 1991 with an increase of 51.19%. The index posted further increases in 1992 and 1993 of 7.77% and 13.37% respectively. On the Value side of the small-cap equation the story is similar with the ’90 to ’91 swing from a decrease of 21.77% to an increase of 41.70%. Moving out of the 2001/2002 malaise, Small Cap Growth moved from worst to best – down 30.26% in ’02 and up 48.54% in ’03 (by the way that’s a full 20% better than the improvement of the large cap stocks). Small Cap Value stayed at the top of the board gaining 46.03%, 22.25%, 4.71% and 23.48% in years ’03, ’04,’05 and ’06 respectively.

In these contraction cycles, companies that are big on fundamentals but small in market capitalization are often ignored by Wall Street. Although poised to lead the economic expansion, the micro-caps don't get a lot of attention... until they get all of the attention as history has proven.
